Medicare open enrollment is October 15 - December 7, 2019. This is the one time a year that you can shop around for a new Part D (prescription drug) plan or Medicare Advantage plan to cover you effective January 1, 2020.

Let’s make sure that your plan for 2020 covers the medications you need at the most affordable price.

Things to consider in choosing a Part D plan or reviewing your Medicare Advantage plan drug coverage include:

• Monthly premium, which varies depending on the plan you choose and where you live

• Formularies, to ensure your needed medication will be covered

• Deductible for brand name prescriptions

• Copayments and coinsurance

• Out-of-pocket maximums, particularly if you take a very expensive drug and are sure to exceed this

• Pharmacies that contract with that plan (there can be a big cost difference)

• Finally, the plans’ Star Ratings, which show their track record for handling claims and providing good customer service.
